Buninyong church conversion attracts eyes far and wide

Buyers from as far as Singapore are eyeing a divine tri-level church conversion in country Victoria.

The former Methodist Church at 802 Warrenheip St, Buninyong, 97km northwest of Melbourne, is on the market for $1.3-$1.43 million.

More than 150 years old, it was built in 1866 and converted into a five-bedroom family home about 18 years ago.

Exposed oregon trusses that are centuries old make a statement inside the former church.

Harcourts agent Jan Millar said the property had generated strong interest from locals and buyers from as far as Melbourne, Sydney and overseas, including Singapore.

“It is a magnificent historical landmark that has been restored beautifully,” she said.

“Its integrity has been kept intact.”

Exquisite gothic leadlight-glass windows and timber ceilings bring character and warmth.

The triple-brick building stands tall on a substantial 1767sq m block with a private garden and mature trees.

It makes a striking impression with its decorative plaster mouldings, high-pitched Welsh slate roof and gothic windows.

“Its symmetry and style has also attracted buyers,” Ms Millar said.

“All the mouldings have been restored and painted,” Ms Millar said.

“And as the timbers came from England, the trusses could be centuries old.”

The clever conversion has created a tri-level home that includes five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a balcony with views and a top loft that incorporates the timber trusses.

“This is an amazing level used where you can climb over the trusses,” Ms Millar said.

“It’s used as an attic-style studio.”

Ms Millar said church renovations usually had mezzanine floors but this one featured a full-length first floor that stretched from the front to the back of the building.

An enclosed outdoor entertainment area leads to the established gardens.

Also, heating was not an issue as there were gas heaters in every room, ceiling fans and insulation.

“The triple-brick walls are perfect for heat control, sound proofing and producing amazing acoustics, perfect for musicians,” Ms Millar said.

Pressed-metal splashback adorns the kitchen.

Other features include open-plan living and dining areas, a well-equipped modern kitchen with pressed-metal splashbacks, and a main bedroom with an ensuite and a balcony.

The owner who is a collector had lived at the property for about 11 years.

“He is looking for a sea-change and hopes to find a smaller, more manageable home of similar character near a regional city,” Ms Millar said.
